The Alfred Friedman Lecture Notes From the Jerome Baumring Investment Centre Seminars

Over 200 pages of new Baumring notes discovered

Introduction to the Text

After the untimely death of Dr. Jerome Baumring in 1992, a group of his students joined together to attempt to continue their research. In order to have the best resources possible, they gathered together all of their notes from the Seminars, and compared them in order to put together the most comprehensive set. Amusingly, yet tragically, everyone discovered that they had almost the exact same notes as each other, and few pages of them at that.

This seems to have happened because, during the seminars, Jerry was so intense, and it took so much attention just to follow his discussions, that no one was able to take notes at the same time. Occasionally Jerry would pause, perhaps to draw a diagram, and everyone else would start scribbling the last things they remembered, and copy the diagram as he drew it. So a comparison of everyone’s notes showed that they all had fallen victim to this same problem, and they all had the same, pathetically incomplete notes consisting of the same quick scribbles followed by a picture.

There was one student, however, who broke the mold, Julius Nirenstein. Julius was a Harvard educated attorney, well versed in note taking, and a private student of Dr. Baumring, and attended the seminars primarily to take thorough notes in order to ask Jerry about them later during his private sessions. Everyone was shocked to discover that where they had 5 pages of notes, Julius had 30. So we abandoned the group notes, and I later arranged to publish Julius’ Notes as the primary resource for Jerry’s original teachings, which they have been for 15 years. Outside of private student’s notes, these were the only detailed record that we possessed of what Jerry actually taught at the seminars. Someone once told me that there was one woman at the seminars who took everything down in shorthand. With luck, we may find her someday, but until recently, Julius was the best and the only resource we had.

Now, 15 years later we have discovered something new. It turns out that there was another student at the seminars who took exceptional notes, Alfred Friedman. I remember Al distantly, from the first group of seminar attendees, of which I was a member, 20 years ago, but never knew him well, and he was not a member of the group that formed after Jerry’s death. Al remained in contact with a handful of other Baumring students, and continued his research and interest in the markets. Sadly, this last year Al passed away too, but to our great fortune, he left his market collection and notes to another old friend and Baumring student from that first seminar series, Tom Wallace.

Tom contacted me, and brought me the notes, thinking that they would be of great interest and value to all Baumring students as another record of Jerry’s teaching, as well as being a nice way to produce some extra income for Al’s family. Al’s Notes are almost as detailed and extensive as Julius’ Notes but containing variations on coverage and presentation in the details, just over 200 pages to Julius’ 250.

These Notes include many important elaborations, clues and details that will fill in holes in Julius’ Notes, and that together, they will give us a clearer and more elaborate understanding of Jerry’s original thought. This set of notes tends to give a better presentation of the practical techniques that Baumring illustrated, whereas Nirenstein's notes focused more upon the theoretical bases. But these difference simply make clear that possessing both sets of notes is of the greatest benefit to any student.

I actually learned a lot of information from Al's notes that was not in Julius'. At one point I wondered if these guys even went to the same lecture as their notes are so different. Julius has more of the theory whereas Al was focused on application.
